Q. What percentage of the brain is made up of water?
A. 75-85% (source: Water Aid, UK website)
Q. Which organs use the most water?
A. Even without any visible perspiration, approximately half of our water loss occurs through the skin and lungs. Simply breathing in and out uses more than a pint of water a day. (source: Water UK)
Q. What can happen when we become mildly dehydrated?
A. Symptoms include light headedness, irritability, lethargy, reduced concentration, headaches and even digestive problems. Keeping fluid levels up helps you stay alert and focused. (source: Expert Group on Hydration)
Q. What percentage of fluid deficiency triggers a decline in a pupil’s ability to concentrate?
A. Just 1-2%! (source: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
Q, How much fluid do we need to drink each day?
A. 1.2 litres (six to eight glasses). This is why it is so important for pupils to have access to healthy drinks throughout the day – not just when the canteen is open. (source: The Food Standards Agency)
Q. What types of drinks are most beneficial to us?
A. Water, milk, fruit juice and juicy water. These are the only drinks available in Top-Up StationsTM supplied by The School Drinks Company and recommended by the government for consumption in schools. (source: The School Drinks Company)
Q. Milk drinks contain calcium. Why do we need it in our diet?
A. Calcium helps develop healthy bones and teeth. Children’s calcium requirements increase dramatically from about the age of 11, making milk drinks an excellent choice of fluid, as they not only rehydrate the body, but also provide a host of beneficial nutrients. (source: The Dairy Council)
Q. What type of drink provides us with both vitamins and minerals?
A. Pure fruit juices. They are popular with children and contain valuable vitamins and minerals that are good for your pupils’ health, especially vitamin C. Not only do pure fruit juices offer an ideal way to rehydrate, they also count as one of your ‘five-a-day.’ (source: Food Standards Agency)
Q. Why is vending important in schools?
A. According to the British Nutrition Foundation, vending can provide “a controlled choice of drinks to enable adequate hydration. Schools can choose what they stock in these machines and a balance of water, fruit juice, dairy drinks and low calorie drinks would provide children with access to a variety of beverages that would encourage them to drink frequently.” (source: BNF ‘Food in Schools Toolkit’)
